Readings: Jeremiah 23:1-6, Ephesians 2:11-22, Mark 6:30-44
Are you ever not amazed by the details in the Bible? This week’s reading from Mark 6 tells us about 5,000 men eating as Jesus multiplied five loaves and two fish. Mark notes that Jesus “directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.” I suppose people counted off until they hit 50, then sat down. That’s some kind of detail. Perhaps that’s why the number 5,000 could be recorded. And Mark notes that the grass was green. I often picture the hills as dry and rocky, so I like that Mark tells us all the people got to sit on green grass to have dinner. Jesus is aware of all the details, all the time. Each of the 5,000 counted, each was seated, fed, and taught by the Living Word Himself. It’s good for us to notice the details, and know God notices, too. Whisper a thank You for the green grass, the thunderhead clouds, your chair, your dinner, your breath, your Bible. Let yourself be amazed by the details!
