Fifth Grade - Chad Block
Chad Block
I grew up in Phoenix and graduated from Valley Lutheran High School. After spending one year at the University of Arizona, I transferred to Concordia University in Irvine where I earned my Bachelor’s in Music Education and my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. I spent 8 years in California teaching fifth grade self-contained, seventh grade language arts and math, and eighth grade algebra and physics. In 2005 I moved back to Phoenix and joined the staff at Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran School. I enjoy teaching fifth grade, coaching several sports, and spending time with my family.
My favorite Bible verse is Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Fifth grade has a wonderful curriculum. Here are some of the highlights:
Religion – Old Testament history and Bible stories; life of Christ; life of Martin
Luther
Reading – study of several novels including Number the Stars, Indian in the Cupboard, Bridge to Terabithia, My Brother Sam is Dead, and Hatchet; we also read several excerpts from an anthology
Science – earth science, solar system, basic physics and chemistry, life science
History – early exploration, Native Americans, colonies, Revolutionary and Civil Wars
English – sentence structure, creative writing, five paragraph essays
Math – basic computation, fractions, decimals, percents, analyzing word problems
Projects – book reports, State Report
Edline
Schoolnotes
"Shepherd of the Desert is a wonderful place in which students have the opportunity to learn about Christ, participate in several extracurricular activities, and be part of a loving community which truly cares for them."
